Designer’s Den: Renovating and Renewing

murphy bed bradenton designer's den

If you’re interested in getting a custom service done by More Space Place Bradenton, you might be wondering: how does this process work? Take a look at this in-depth explanation from one of our designers, Peter, of how our process works from start to finish including renovating and renewing.

The Idea:

This customer is a longtime customer of More Space Place with a home on Anna Maria Island. This customer had a gorgeous 50-year-old home that was newly renovated. This home had three small bedrooms and low ceilings so they felt a Murphy bed with storage cabinetry would be perfect for their space.

The Process:

Upon receiving notice of a custom request we usually discuss the details of the project via a private appointment. During this appointment, we make an inventory, take measurements and decide what type of Murphy bed would be best for the space.

This time the customer went with the Cosmopolitan Queen Side Bed with finished storage. The cabinetry for the bed would go up wall-to-wall from floor to ceiling. In this room, after the renovations were completed in the house there wasn’t a closet. Because of this, we also determined that hanging bars in the wall units on the outer left and right would be beneficial for guests to hang clothes.

As for the design, the customer was at first leaning towards a wood grain or darker finish for the cabinetry. However, since the floors were a darker wood, this designer suggested going with a white shaker painted profile for the doors, trim, and facia, to provide contrast and bring more light into the room. The customer was very pleased with the final project, when completed, and commented that “It was giving us two rooms out of one”.

Designer’s Den: An Abundance of Cherry (Wood)

Designer’s Den: An Abundance of Cherry (Wood)

If you’re interested in getting a custom service done by More Space Place Sarasota or Bradenton, you might be wondering: how does this process work? Take a look at this first-hand account from one of our designers, Mark Schefke, on the process from start to finish.

The Vision:

“This customer came into our Sarasota store with a unique request. He was frustrated with the lack of storage in his office. He wanted to custom design his room to accommodate a Murphy bed with lots of storage to put his favorite books to put on display. In the same room, he wanted a functional home office desk with a large cabinet to display his memorabilia from his companies as well as space for a heavy statue in the corner.

The Project:

At More Space Place, we have many different options for designs in terms of wood finish and hardware. While this can sometimes be a difficult decision for customers, the customer had just had his late grandfather’s favorite chair refinished and reupholstered. The arms were a very unique cherry wood with a light cherry finish. Thus, the customer wanted the wood of his new cabinetry to match his grandfather’s chair. In order to get the match exactly right, we created a custom stain of Cherry for the ultimate seamless blend.

As for the storage setup, our solution was a Jefferson Queen size Murphy Bed (128” Wide), with lower cabinets, a work surface, and a Wall unit all finished in the custom stained Cherry color. We measured the space and got to work creating the storage unit of our customer’s dreams! The wall unit was 90” high and 36” wide and had entirely glass shelves with LED Lights on both the upper and lower fixed shelves, to properly show off the memorabilia to be displayed. Both the Murphy Bed and the Wall unit were equipped with Crown Moldings, and the hardware used was Black Arched Pulls.

We were happy that we were able to find a solution to our customer’s worries and he was very pleased with the results.

Designer’s Den: From Cramped to Comfortable

sarasota designer's den skylar cressey design

We’re back with another Designer’s Den! Your behind-the-scenes access to learning more about the More Space Place process of custom installation from start to finish. Read on to find out how designer Skylar Cressey turned this cramped car dealership into a comfortable workspace for everyone!

The Vision:

“When I first received the call that a car dealership wanted to explore options of design work with us, I was hesitant. We had never designed to that magnitude before, so naturally, I was unsure how this design would happen. When I arrived at Englewood Ford a week after I received the call, I spoke with very sweet and helpful staff who expressed exactly what they were looking for. Their previous setting wasn’t doing it for them, and they needed a desk set up to accommodate 6 people.

The space was quite large, so I knew it was going to be a big job. They said they wanted to keep it simple, yet functional. The most important thing was making sure that everyone had enough room to be able to comfortably talk to other clients in private. After I measured the space and got all the information I needed, I got to designing this custom office space. While designing, I made sure every employee had at least 3 feet of legroom space, so no one felt squished. I included a base cabinet with storage for files, office supplies, and other miscellaneous items next to everyone’s desk. I also make sure I included a USB Grommet next to everyone’s desk so they would all have access to plugs and outlets.

The Project:

Because I had never done anything like this before, I made sure to meet with our seasoned installer to see what extra material needed to be ordered, labor that needed to be accounted for, and if this scale of design was even possible. After the green light from the installer, I went ahead and sent over the designs to the manager who absolutely loved it! After that, a few of them took a ride up to visit me in my showroom and pick out colors, desktop, and hardware options. They went with a lighter “Candlelight Maple” wood tone, a lighter desktop color, and Brushed Nickel hardware to tie it all together.

Once I sold the job, I was so anxious to see how it was going to turn out. And to no surprise, our installer did a remarkable job! Everything came out even better than I was expecting, and most importantly, everyone was so happy! Say goodbye to cramped desk space and hello to a neat and organized space! The total time from measuring to installing was roughly 3 months and the process could not have gone any smoother.”

Designer’s Den: Memorabilia Storage Design

sarasota custom design

If you’re interested in getting a custom service done by More Space Place Sarasota, you might be wondering: how does this process work? Take a look at this in-depth explanation from designer Cathy Davis, of how our process works from start to finish.

The Idea:

Last year we received a customer request for creating wall storage for various memorabilia and knick-knacks. This customer, Joann, was located in Punta Gorda and found us through Google. This project included storage for a 1200 record album collection, CDs, Beatles memorabilia, and Wizard of Oz figurines. Joann was also interested in a custom desk placed across from the stored albums in the same room.

The Process:

Upon receiving notice of a custom request we usually discuss the details of the project via a private appointment. During this appointment, we made an inventory and measured the items they needed storage for. After some email correspondence, we crafted the final design. Our designers suggested we add a window seat, and Joann was all for it, thus the final product was created!

Designer’s Den: Bedroom to a Hobby Room

bradenton custom bed to hobby room by jamie kirk

If you’re interested in getting a custom service done by More Space Place Bradenton, you might be wondering: how does this process work? Take a look at this first-hand account from one of our designers, Jamie Kirk, on the process from start to finish.

The Project:

“A customer in Lakewood Ranch came to me for help turning a bedroom of her recently purchased home into a multi-functional hobby room she could be proud of! She wanted to have a workspace that could also be used for crafts but thought it would be great to have a secondary guest room as well.

When it came to designing, the customer had some ideas, but not a full vision. I assisted her by discovering that she needed a lot of file storage, display areas, a Queen Bed, and a functional workspace. As for the details, she wanted the room to feel light, and airy, with a hint of modern aesthetic.

The design that we finalized, as pictured, fits her room perfectly! At about 12 x 15, we had a lot of great space to work with, though a design like this can be scaled down to a room as small as 10 x 10. In this rendition, we put Large File Drawers with a Custom Window Seat, for which the customer stated she will make a cushion herself.

To create a beautiful Display area, we created a wall-to-wall Custom Hutch on either side of the Murphy bed with Trim Atop. This creates a very clean, bright, and functional-looking unit without using glass or lights. These units match the height of the bed while being more shallow than the bed and Countertop below. This, therefore, adds dimension to the shelves above and seamlessly ties in the workstation.

A configuration like this can be customized in many different ways, based on the customer’s needs. In every case, I try to discover my customer’s primary needs for the space in terms of usage, storage, and aesthetics.”
